This Viral Hashtag Makes an Important Point About Body-Shaming

The founder started it with a story of her own.

Hearing comments about our bodies can be painful, and unfortunately, comments of a negative nature usually make more of an impact than those that are positive. Body-shaming comments can often influence us for a while and can shape the way we feel about ourselves for years to come. Just ask Sally Bergesen, CEO of sportswear company Oiselle, who tweeted about a comment her own father made about her when she was 12 that she still remembers.

The tweet reads, "‘Keep eating like that and you’re going to be a butterball.’ My dad when I was 12. Pls RT and share a body shaming comment. #TheySaid” and many people responded quickly, either by using the hashtag #TheySaid or by responding to her initial tweet to talk about instances they were made to feel less-than because of their bodies. Here are just some of the stories people tweeted in response to Bergesen.

Because Bergesen runs a sportswear company, many of the replies are from athletes, and it's obvious that people have a lot of stereotypes about what athletes "should" and "shouldn't" look like. People of all sizes can participate in physical activity and size doesn't determine physical fitness. However, you'll realize something important while looking through the other replies in the hashtag — at some point, nearly everyone has dealt with body-shaming for some reason or another. While this realization can be heartbreaking, it also means that if you've dealt with it yourself, you're not alone.

It should go without saying that other people's bodies are completely off the table for comment, especially if that comment is negative. But because there's still a lot of body-shaming going on out there, we'll say this: all bodies are beautiful, each and every one.
