Jenn Grant brings Paradise to Charlottetown this Thursday

P.E.I.-raised musician Jenn Grant is bringing Paradise to Charlottetown Thursday night at the Florence Simmons Performance Hall at Holland College.

The lead single, Galaxies, is unmistakably Grant's unique sound — from the kooky opening keyboard riff to Grant's soaring, ethereal vocals and her quirky little shoo-bop exclamations of "Ooh, Ha!" throughout.

"I think there's kind of a lushness that I'm drawn to and that's kind of what we go for with the sounds on most of the records," Grant told CBC Radio: Mainstreet's Angela Walker. That "we" includes Grant's husband, producer and fellow Islander Daniel Ledwell.

Grant had written more than 40 songs for the album — most of them will probably never be published, Grant said, as she doesn't tend to look back to her old writing, preferring fresh songs for each new album.

'Looking up to the stars'

The Halifax-based alt-pop musician is especially proud of the video for Galaxies, directed by Toronto's Adam Goldhammer.

In it, seniors stumble through dark woods, drawn by the bright rainbow of lights from a grounded UFO. In another scene, a young girl awakens in the forest and is drawn by the light of the same object. Her image is replicated many times until she is surrounded by herself, happily.

"It really captured some of the images in my mind," said Grant. "The song is really about the idea of home — looking up to the stars, up to the galaxy, looking for your place."

Twice nominated for a Juno for 2014's Compostela, maybe Paradise will bring the win for Grant in 2018.

Grant's performance with her band begins Thursday night at 7:30 with guest act Kim Harris of Newfoundland and Labrador. After some shows at this weekend's East Coast Music Week in Saint John, N.B., they'll perform in England and Ireland with guest Hannah Georgas.
