Cleveland Police investigating fatal accident on I-71

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - Cleveland Police are investigating a fatal accident on Interstate 71.

The accident happened around 11:40pm, Saturday, September 30th, on I-71 northbound at West 14th street near the I-90 west split.

Police said in a media release that a 25-year-old man was driving "in excess of the posted speed limit" when he struck a metal guard rail along the left shoulder.

The driver was partially ejected from the car on impact. The car then went all the way across four lanes of traffic and slammed into the concrete shoulder wall.

The driver and a 29-year-old woman who was in the car were both taken to MetroHealth Medical Center. The driver, identified by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office as Shon Thomas, was pronounced dead.

The passenger suffered from a fractured neck and cuts to her face. Her name and condition are unknown.
