Police have named the motorcyclist who died in a serious Northumberland crash on Wednesday.

Ian Bell Whillans, 60, was pronounced dead after the collision with a Mercedes car on the A697 near Cornhill-on-Tweed .

Mr Whillans, who was from the Galashiels in the Scottish Borders, was travelling north on his motorcycle and the Mercedes was travelling south when they collided at Westfield - approximately 1 ½ miles south of the A697/A698 roundabout at Gose Law.

The collision occurred at around 2.22pm.

Police are now appealing for any witness to the crash to come forward and help with their investigation.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “The road was closed for three-and-a-half hours to allow for the casualty to be treated and the crash scene to be examined.

“Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision, anyone with information is asked to contact Northumbria Police motor patrols on 101 quoting reference 641 of 11/10/17.”
