Aberystwyth University to close campus in Mauritius

Aberystwyth University is planning to close its controversial overseas campus on the island of Mauritius two years after it opened.

The campus, more than 6,000 miles away and with a distinctly warmer climate than its Welsh parent, was built to accommodate 2,000 students but just 106 enrolled in its second year.

The decision to close has been welcomed by politicians and academics who had questioned the wisdom of the overseas expansion. In May 2016 Derec Llwyd Morgan, a former vice-chancellor of the university, described it as “madness”.

Aberystwyth University declined to comment.

The closure plans were discovered by the BBC after they were published on the university website in minutes from its governing council meeting in October. The minutes, which have since been taken down,
