On The Keto Diet? You Need This Holiday Survival Guide

This article is more than 5 years old.

Fat Snax

Have you hopped on the low carb, high fat keto train and are looking for ways to avoid being derailed? The holidays can be challenging for people following any restrictive eating plan but, fortunately, there are plenty of ways to enjoy this time of year without straying too far from keto’s guiding principles.

Breakfast

French toast, croissants, muffins and other bready foods are staples for breakfast this time of year. Fortunately, these tend to be served alongside things that are absolutely perfect for people on the keto diet, including things like omelets, sausages, bacon and eggs.

Here are some recipes to try this holiday season:

Of course, there are also many ready-to-eat products to help make the season bright. Here’s a short list of things that I’ve tried and loved:

Using ThinSlim Foods’ Zero Carb Bread, I have successfully made French toast that I covered in butter and the Lakanto syrup. It was magnificent! Also, for most of my life, I’ve been one of those people who snacks on a bowl of cereal once in a while. I’ve really missed that so I was thrilled to find the Catalina Crunch Dark Chocolate cereal!

You won’t find a Fit Donut counter unless you happen to live near Boise, Idaho but I included it because you may find something similar in your area. Eating a low carb, high protein donut for breakfast almost every morning has helped me stay on track and I plan to continue through the holiday season!

The Big Meal

Unless you give yourself permission to indulge a little — and, really, there’s nothing wrong with that as long as you get back on track — you’ll have to pass on the mashed potatoes, stuffing and candied yams. Fortunately, there are many fantastic recipes you can use to enjoy that big holiday meal without feeling deprived.

Sides:

If you’re hosting the meal, it will be easy for you to make these dishes for everyone to enjoy. If you’ll be a guest in someone’s home, explain your needs and ask if you can bring your own food. Be sure to prepare enough in case others want a taste!

Desserts

You could make it through the entire day without straying from keto-friendly food but the real challenge might be resisting the temptation of holiday cookies and pies.

Don’t feel like baking? Try some Fat Snax cookies which come in Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter or Lemony Lemon flavors. If you order one of the variety packs, you’ll get an even mix of all three! I heard that Santa might be trying to shed a few pounds so you might want to leave him a couple of these soft, delicious low carb cookies and some almond milk this year!

If you’re looking for an ice cream, consider ordering something from Killer Creamery. The Idaho-based company sells (and ships!) a delicious keto-friendly ice cream in the following flavors: Caramels Back, Chilla in Vanilla, Coco You Know, Jam Session, No Judge Mint and PB & Whey. It’s super creamy and perfect on its own, served with pie or between two of those Fat Snax cookies!

Missing your eggnog and cocktails? Try these recipes for Eggnog with Almond Milk and Gingerbread Martinis to sip along with your sweet treats!

If you’ve adopted the low carb lifestyle, you might be stressed about the holiday season but you don’t need to be. While you might give yourself permission to indulge a little, there are plenty of keto-friendly foods that will keep you fed and satisfied. Happy holidays!
