Officials of the group Hire Here said $340 million has been spent on construction projects by the city and county over the last four years, and more than $132 million of that spending has gone to contractors from outside of Hamilton County.
The group presented members of the City Council and County Commission with an analysis of all of the public construction projects – using city or county funds – let out for bid in Hamilton County for the last four years.
Officials said the numbers "are a best effort, based on the records contained in the McGraw-Hill Construction Reports."
Local engineer and Hire Here spokesperson April Eidson said, "The numbers make a strong case. They mean that almost 40 percent of the public’s funds are going to companies from as far away as Memphis and Texas.
“We cannot begin to calculate the exact economic impact of using out-of-town firms for projects funded by the people of Chattanooga.”
She said more than 30 of the 85 projects in this period were done by general contractors from out of town. Twenty five of the contracts were given to general contractors from outside the Chattanooga MSA.
Ms. Eidson said, “It is possible to make an educated guess regarding the impact. Generally speaking, a dollar entering the marketplace multiplies three times. So for every dollar spent outside of Chattanooga, the public loses the impact three times over. That amounts to a staggering $390 million.”
