Monroe hosts state NAACP conference

Louisiana NAACP delegates will spend Sept. 20-22 in Monroe for their state Convention and Training Conference at the University of Louisiana Monroe.

The convention will bring together delegates, members and friends from around Louisiana with numerous educational sessions. The event theme is “Educate, Empower, Engage," and topics include:

  • domestic violence,
  • economic sustainability,
  • education,
  • health,
  • public safety,
  • criminal justice,
  • voting rights and political representation.

The President’s Meet and Greet reception is 7 p.m. Thursday at Bayou Pointe on the ULM campus. The Monroe City and Ouachita Parish high school bands and choir will perform. Special guests include Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo, City Council members and other elected officials, business and community leaders. This event is free and open to the public.

Bishop Kevin J. Boyd Sr. from New Orleans will be the Prayer Breakfast speaker on at 9 a.m. Friday at The Terrace on the seventh floor of the ULM library. Tickets are $15. 

Gov. John Bel Edwards will deliver the address at the Labor and Industry Luncheon on 12:15 p.m. Friday. Tickets cost $2.

At 6 p.m. Friday, the Memorial Service will start at Greater New Antioch Baptist Church, followed by the Mass Meeting at 7 p.m. and the Gospel Extravaganza at 8 p.m. The events will feature singing from Monroe churches and community choirs.

On Saturday, Monroe City Councilwoman Juanita Woods, District 2, will be the speaker at the Women In NAACP Luncheon. It starts at 12:15 p.m. at The Terrace. Tickets cost $20.

The Youth Leadership Luncheon starts at the same time in the Student Union Building. The guest speaker is Jimmitriv Roberson. Tickets cost $20.

The Convention culminates with the Freedom Fund Banquet on at 6 p.m. Saturday at The Mount Zion Baptist Church Family Life Center. New York defense attorney and CNN/HLN legal analyst Joey Jackson will deliver the keynote address. Tickets cost $50.

Convention Registration is $30, which allows anyone access to all other convention and training activities.
