Healthy Start

Healthy Start can make a life long difference for children as young as two years of age. Ask your dentist about Sleep Disordered Breathing.

So, it doesn’t seem like it’s been 23-years since our first continuing education trip straight outa Temple City and LA County. Hadn’t been on a plane since age twelve when three of us departed from Ontario to SeaTac to Calgary Airport for two solid days that changed everything. We haven’t looked back.

The CDA requires 50-hours of continuing education per two years; we do between 150-200 hours/year…probably because I’m not a quick study. You’d think, by now, I would’ve seen it all.

This past January, I attended an Invisalign President’s meeting called to order by the leader of the most successful GP Invisalign group on the globe. And just being part of the conference held in Nassau, the Bahamas, was cause for reflection.

Part of the conference included various dental-related companies pitching their products. One of the presenters was transforming lives and starting early. Doc Jill Ombrello, from Dallas, had my colleagues and I signing on the training days dotted line even before the standing ovation had lost a few decibels.

The central issue for many children suffering from the effects of Sleep Disordered Breathing is a compromised airway. When a child’s airway is narrow or constricted in any way, the child will struggle to receive oxygen at night, resulting in serious health issues. Jill’s program, Healthy Start, provides an ideal airway by guiding jaw development with a series of uniquely designed oral appliances.

The consequences of Sleep Disordered Breathing are many and lasting, considering the challenge impacts night breathing during critical times of both physical and cognitive development. Some common symptoms include ADD/ADHD, bed wetting, mouth breathing, difficulty in school, chronic allergies, crowded teeth, teeth grinding, and delayed growth.

Healthy Start can make a difference for children as young as two years of age. Destructive habit patterns can be reversed in as few as two months.

If young family members exhibit any of the symptoms I’ve mentioned, please search “Healthy Start” to learn more or ask your dentist about Sleep Disordered Breathing.
