South Africa continued to have a satisfying time against Bangladesh. They gained an unassailable 2-0 lead over their timid visitors. The second ODI of the three-match affair saw the Proteas thrash the Bangla Lions by a massive 104-run margin. For the home side, the duo of Andile Phehlukwayo and Imran Tahir picked up 7 wickets between them. It was, however, AB de Villiers’s thunderous 176 that set up the win for South Africa in the first session of play.
Bolstered by Tamim Iqbal’s presence in the side, Bangladesh came out to chase down 354 runs. Tamim and Imrul Kayes played out a hostile spell of bowling by Kagiso Rabada. Both openers were severe on Dane Paterson, taking him for 23 from 3 overs.
Dwaine Pretorius brought their resistance to an end but trapping Tamim leg-before for 23. Liton Das came to the middle with a clear intent to counterattack. He managed to hit a four and a monstrous six before getting out leg-before to Pretorius on 14.
Skipper Mushfiqur Rahim walked out to resurrect a falling innings. He kept things quiet for a while along with Kayes. Rahim continued his good form from the Kimberley ODI, while Kayes ensured the scoreboard kept ticking away.
A nudge to the off-side brought up the 50-run stand between Kayes and Rahim. Kayes survived a simple chance on 49, a rather simple chance. He responded with a four off the next ball to bring up his 14th half-century. Both batsmen played with composure taking Bangladesh’s score past 150.
Rahim reached his 27th career fifty in 60 balls, but Kayes then holed out straight to ABD off Tahir. Tahir got Shakib Al Hasan too, for 5.
With required run-rate skyrocketing, Mahmudullah came out to support Rahim. Pretorius, recalled to the attack, delivered. Rahim, foxed by a slower ball, handed a simple catch at backward point for a 70-ball 60. Tahir snapped up Rahman for a 18-ball 17; his third wicket.
Nasir Hossain lasted 11 balls before Phehlukwayo demolished his leg stump. Phehlukwayo stuck again, dismissing Mashrafe Mortaza in the same over for 0. He finished his spell picking up Mahmudullah for 35, ending with figures of 4 for 40.
Paterson finished off the innings picking his maiden ODI wicket in the form of Rubel Hossain. Bangladesh folded for 249 in 47.5 overs.
The morning session at Paarl was lit up by the belligerence of de Villiers. He slammed a hundred in 68 balls, and his 176 came off a mere 104 balls. Hashim Amla ably supported him with a 92-ball 85. Rubel did manage to pin down some damage taking a 4 for 62, with most wickets coming in death overs.
The 3rd ODI will take place at Buffalo Park, East London on October 22.
