Pedro The Lion brings musical roar to High Dive Sunday

Scott Kauffmann Correspondent
The group Pedro the Lion, featuring singer David Bazan, will perform Sunday at High Dive with special guests Marie/Lepanto starting at 7 p.m.

The group Pedro The Lion is the brain child of David Bazan, possibly my favorite American songwriter. Though they don’t exactly exist anymore, and haven’t for about 15 years, Pedro The Lion is still influential throughout the indie community, despite religious overtones. During the course of its run, Bazan and company tackled topics that make most other christian songwriters squeamish: infidelity, alcoholism and loss of faith. He did it, and still does under his own name, absolutely beautifully with a dry wit and a crooked smile.

Bazan is the type of musician that hangs out at the bar before and after his set, and will talk to anyone, no matter how annoying (also known as yours truly). He invites questions, which probably sums up his style. The man is a national treasure, with the voice of a fallen angel and songs that will make you dance, cry, laugh… the whole gambit. If you see one show this year, make it this one.

Check them out Sunday, when they perform along with special guests Marie/Lepanto at High Dive, starting at 7 p.m.
