A Central New York town has been named one of the best for celebrating the upcoming holidays.
A new list by carrentals.com named the 25 "most festive holiday towns" in America. Only one place in Upstate New York made the cut: Skaneateles, N.Y.
Skaneateles was named No. 14 in America for making the season bright thanks to its Dickens Christmas Festival, which begins the day after Thanksgiving and runs every weekend through Dec. 23. More than 50 characters from Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" dress up and interact with residents and visitors around town.
Additional highlights in Skaneateles include the World's Smallest Christmas Parade, Christmas carol singalong at the Gazebo in Clift Park; roasted chestnuts at Johnny Angels, dashing through the snow in horse-drawn carriages; dinner with "Dickens and Friends" on Dec. 7 at the Mirbeau Inn & Spa; and chances to tell Santa Claus what you want for Christmas at the Masonic Temple.
According to the car rental site's blog, all of the selected cities and towns are being recognized for celebrating "this magical time of year in their own unique ways." Newport Beach, California, for example, was named No. 1 because of its annual Christmas Boat Parade ,where boats are lit up with Christmas lights along Newport Bay.
Rounding out the top five are Bernville, Pennsylvania; Nantucket, Massachusetts; Breckenridge, Colorado; and New York City, New York. Other notables in the top 25 include North Pole, Alaska; Santa Claus; Indiana; Chicago, Illinois; and San Francisco, California.
