Central Indiana high school football roundup: Sectional finals

Sectional finals week didn't disappoint. Here's what you might have missed from Friday night.

► Avon stunned No. 2 Brownsburg right from the start, and the punches just kept coming. By the time the game was finished, the Orioles had shut out the Bulldogs and ended the season of a team that came in without a loss. Here's what insider Kyle Neddenriep saw.

► Decatur Central hadn't won a sectional title since 2005. That changed Friday night with an impressive win over perennial power Cathedral. Here's how it happened.

► It was business as usual for Warren Central in a dominant win over Lawrence Central, but it wasn't a dynamic offense that led the way this week. In fact, the Warriors led 14-0 16 seconds into the game, but the offense hadn't touched the ball. Here's how it happened.

► It was a scene 25 years in the making for the North Central football team. The Panthers kept their dream season alive by beating Fishers 42-7 to win their first sectional title since 1993. Next up? Warren Central. Here's how it happened.

Mooresville 49, Greenwood 14

If you've ever wondered what a difference a year makes, just ask the Pioneers.

Nearly one year to the day that Greenwood ran the Mooresville off its own field in the sectional championship game, the Pioneers returned the favor in impressive fashion.

Revenge for the way the 2017 season ended wasn’t a part of the Mooresville gameplan Friday night, but it was the elephant in the room.

“Oh, (last year’s loss) definitely played into it,” Mooresville coach Mike Gillin said. “They were the (experienced) team last year that had the great year, but we were on the other side of it this year with a lot more experience. We wanted to get off to a fast start. We’d been struggling with that the last few weeks. So, we got the big lead and hung on.”

Mooresville got the big lead and kept adding to it. The Pioneers didn’t hang on, they put it in cruise control. Mooresville finished with 438 total yards.

Jon Eineman’s 63-yard touchdown on a swing pass from fellow senior Karson Goodman swung the momentum in Mooresville’s favor and swept away what little bit of gas the Woodmen had left in the tank. The score made it 21-0 Mooresville in the first quarter.

Eineman finished with five receptions for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Goodman completed 10-of-18 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns. Both were well aware of the way this game ended last season.

“We jumped on them early (in the regular season) and then today we did the same thing,” Eineman said. “Everybody remembered (last year’s sectional championship). We all played with a chip on our shoulder. It felt really good to get them back two times this year.”

With Greenwood starting quarterback Oliver Rau out, sophomore Luke Hommell took over under center. Hommell’s first pass attempt sailed past the intended receiver and into a defender’s hands for an interception. Greenwood finished with just six passing yards. Senior Nick Willham and sophomore Ethan Haessig rushed for 109 yards and 102 yards, respectively.

Greenwood coach Mike Campbell emphasized the results of this season does not define the senior class, which played a big role in Greenwood’s 2017 run to the semistate game. Greenwood’s seniors also played in four straight sectional championship games, which had never been done in school history.

“We still have a lot of work to do in our program, but we told those seniors the effort and excellence and that they have given us for four years, playing in four straight sectional finals, those guys have something really to be proud of,” Campbell said. “What I’m really proud of is those (seniors) are fine young men. This is more than football for us.” — Corey Elliot

Center Grove 23, Franklin Central 6

The Trojans won their eighth consecutive sectional championship behind sophomore running back Carson Steele’s three rushing touchdowns.

Steele started the game with a 70-yard run on the Trojans’ first play from scrimmage. Two plays later, he found the end zone, and the Trojans never looked back.

It wasn’t all easy for Center Grove, as penalties helped keep Franklin Central close.

“We definitely made some mental errors out there in the first half,” said Trojans coach Eric Moore. “I don’t know who those guys were out there in the second quarter.”

Franklin Central looked to make a comeback late in the game. Center Grove turned the ball over after a snap went over the head of punter PJ Buck. Franklin Central capitalized with a 32-yard pass from Dylan Bishop to Bryce Durn, bringing the Flashes to within 10.

After Franklin Central failed to recover an onside kick, Steele scored his third touchdown of the night four plays later to seal the game.

“I don’t know where eight sectional titles places us in a record book,” Moore told his team after the game. “I do know that we are kings of the Southside.”

Bishop Chatard 42, Indian Creek 6

The Trojans took home a Class 3A sectional title for the second straight year.

Chatard had everything go its way early. The Trojans defense forced two turnovers on the Braves’ first two plays, and senior running back Daylen Taylor capitalized off of great field position both times.

“We’ve been really efficient the last four weeks, we’ve jumped up on every team we’ve played since game nine,” Trojans coach Rob Doyle said. “Our goal is always to come out, play fast, and get our defense rocking early, which we did.”

The Trojans kept it on the ground for the majority of the game as they ran for a total of five touchdowns, two of which the running back walked in untouched.

“We’ve done an excellent job up front all year long. I think we’ve only given up two sacks all year,” said senior quarterback and Ball State commit Mark Nondorf. “They did a great job protecting me and creating wide running wholes for our backs.”

Although Nondorf only threw for one touchdown, he led the Trojans offense to the red zone all seven drives, of which the team scored on six.

“Mark is a Division I football player for a reason,” Doyle said. “He’s an extremely efficient quarterback. He makes great decisions, he gets us where we’re supposed to be, and he doesn’t take any unnecessary risks. When you give him time, he’s going to pick the defense apart.”

The Trojans will take on the Tri-West on Friday for the Class 3A regional championship.

“We had a finish we didn’t like last year in the regional,” Doyle said. “We expect a really good matchup, and regardless of who we play, we’re going to come out and give it our best effort.” — Yousef Abdeldaiem

Scecina 34, Triton Central 30

Down three with just over two minutes left in the Class 2A Sectional 37 Championship game, the message between Scecina quarterback Mac Ayres and receiver David Baker was the same.

“Trust each other,” Ayres said.

Everyone at Mendenhall Field saw that trust shine during the Crusaders’ final drive. After moving the ball 40-plus yards, Ayres took a shotgun snap from Triton Central’s 30-yard line and found Baker who, while falling backward, pulled in what ended up being the game-winning touchdown, putting Scecina up 34-30.

“Every Thursday we practice 2-minute offense at the end of practice,” Ayres said. “I knew we were prepared. I knew (Baker) was going to get it. I trust him on every pass.”

That final catch marked Baker’s seventh of the night, two resulting in touchdowns. Still, the score left Triton Central with two timeouts and 1:01 left.

The Tigers almost won, too, driving down to Scecina’s 20-yard line with a pair of Matt Guhl catches. With time expiring Triton Central quarterback Erick Hebauf nearly connected with Keaton Kermode, but Baker was there to deflect it.

“It’s a huge win,” Baker said. “One, it’s a conference win. Two, it’s a sectional championship win. Three, we get to play next week and play with the seniors for one more game.”

From the beginning, it looked like this game was going to be all Triton Central who, after a pair of offensive drives and a blocked punt returned for a touchdown, took a 21-6 first quarter lead.

But, after scoring 28 of the game’s last 37 points, Scecina pulled away with its second-straight sectional title over Triton Central.

“We won’t hang our heads no matter what the scoreboard is,” Baker said. “We’ll fight to the very last second and, you know, we’ve got some ballplayers on this team.” — Robby General

Western Boone 49, North Putnam 8

It didn’t take the Stars long to get rolling. On just the second offensive play of the game, senior running back Kruze Washington burst through the line and scampered for a touchdown.

Western Boone (12-0) never looked back, claiming its second straight sectional title.

“We knew we needed that momentum,” Washington said. “It played a big part in the offense getting going. We knew we had to start strong and keep pounding.”

After securing a lead through the ground, Western Boone took to the air to build on it. Junior quarterback Spencer Wright connected with Washington once and Joe Hendrix twice for touchdowns to give the Stars a 28-0 halftime lead.

Just as he was in the first half, Washington proved to be the catalyst for the Stars in the second when he sprinted for a 65-yard touchdown on the first play of the half.

In an effort to catch up, North Putnam (8-4) started throwing much more than it did in the first half. The Stars defensive backfield saw an opportunity to feast. Western Boone gobbled up six total turnovers in the game, including four interceptions, one each by Connor Hole, Patrick Shallenberger, Logan Benson, and Josh Benson.

“Our defense played a great role tonight,” Western Boone coach Justin Pelley said. “We were flying to the ball, making the plays, and playing WeBo football.”

Lutheran 32, Hagerstown 13

Indianapolis Lutheran defeated Hagerstown 32-13 in the championship game of the IHSAA Class A Sectional 46 tournament, claiming a fifth consecutive sectional title, and a third straight over the Tigers.

Dante Akins and Marcus McFadden each had touchdown runs for Indianapolis Lutheran, while Michael Joseph had touchdown passes to Ben Settlemyre and Luke Snow. Peyton Knight also had a tackle in the end zone for one of two safeties for Lutheran. Hagerstown fumbled and recovered in the end zone for the other. Xavier Hardiman had an interception for Lutheran’s defense.

Cody Swimm caught a 61-yard touchdown pass from Dominic Anderson on Hagerstown’s first offensive drive of the game, and Mason Hicks scored a 2-yard touchdown run with 14 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

Swimm and Grant Vinson each had an interception for Hagerstown’s defense.

Hagerstown finishes the season with a 9-3 record, while Lutheran advances to the Class A regional championship game against South Putnam, who defeated Traders Point Christian 55-8 to win Sectional 45.

Carmel 41, Lafayette Jeff 21

The Carmel hurdle remains uncleared for the Lafayette Jeff football team.

The Greyhounds scored 35 unanswered points Friday on its way to a 41-21 Class 6A, Sectional 4 victory, the program's 30th sectional title.

Fifth-ranked Lafayette Jeff (9-2), seeking its first sectional title since defeating Carmel in 2002, looked like it would give the third-ranked Greyhounds (10-2) everything they could handle early. Instead, it suffered its fifth consecutive postseason loss to Carmel.

After Jeff raced out to a 14-0 lead, Carmel woke up.

Shifting to a power running game behind sophomore Zach White, the Greyhounds marched 64 yards in nine plays to halve the Jeff lead on White's 3-yard run. White finished with 94 yards on 19 carries before leaving with an injury in the second half.

A busted coverage led to Carmel's tying touchdown, a 35-yard pass from Gabe Quigley to Sam Rogers.

Carmel went 3-for-3 on scoring drives to end the first half, with White bouncing off tacklers to score from 11 yards out and make it 21-14.

Two big plays by Carmel linebacker Joey Schmidt ensured Lafayette Jeff wouldn't make a second half comeback.

Schmidt intercepted a Grimes pass and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown that made it 35-14 early in the fourth quarter. After the Bronchos scored on a Grimes to Jenkins 31-yard touchdown pass, Schmidt picked up the onside kick and carried a tackler into the end zone for the game-clinching score. — Ken Thompson

Cole Alexander threw four touchdown passes and ran for two more to help the Bulldogs (8-4) repeat as a sectional champion with an overtime road victory over the Class 2A No. 8 Raiders (10-2). Alexander’s heroics, which included 285 passing yards and 121 yards on the ground, helped Lapel avenge a 52-7 regular-season loss on the same field eight weeks later. For the victors, Luke DesNoyers played a pivotal role, hitting all six of his extra points, including the game-decider.
