Greenfield Chickens Come Around For Discussion, Again

There was a discussion related to the most recent resident who wanted to change the municipal code last week.

GREENFIELD, WI—Another resident has asked the Village of Greenfield to consider allowing chickens. The request was considered last week at Greenfield Board of Health meeting.

The most recent resident wanted to change the municipal code to permit chickens, according to Darren J. Rausch, the Greenfield Health Department Director.

The Board of Health voted unanimously to preserve the current code and to continue to prohibit chickens in the community.

Keeping backyard poultry including chickens, ducks, geese, guinea fowl, and turkeys has become more popular over the last several years.

People enjoy raising baby poultry, and others keep chickens to have fresh eggs.

"Although keeping backyard poultry can be fun and educational, owners should be aware that poultry can sometimes carry harmful germs that make people sick," according to the Center for Disease Control.

These germs can cause a variety of illnesses in people, ranging from minor skin infections to serious illnesses that could cause death, the health agency reports.
