Man fatally shot inside Camden apartment building, authorities say

CAMDEN -- A city man was shot and killed inside the lobby of an apartment complex late Friday night, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.

After responding to a report of a person shot at Northgate I Apartments at around 11:26 p.m., Camden County Police Department (CCPD) officers found Johnathan Simmons, 19, lying in a lot behind the property near the Ben Franklin Bridge.

Simmons was transported to Cooper University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:44 p.m, according to the prosecutor's office, which added that the incident remains under investigation. According to 6ABC, Simmons suffered a gunshot wound to the chest while inside the lobby of the building.

Early last year, CCPD officers began patrolling the troublesome 320-unit, low-income high-rise apartment complex.
