AMELIA, VA (WWBT) - Police are investigating a shooting in Amelia that put an 11-year-old boy in the hospital. The shooting happened around 6:23 a.m. Wednesday, at a home in Mannboro. Neighbors say the home is located on Oak Grove Loop.

According to the Amelia Bulletin Monitor Facebook page, two young boys, ages 10 and 11, were left alone. The boy was handling a gun, according to the Amelia Bulletin Monitor. That's when sources say the weapon accidentally fired. Another boy, about a year younger, was also there. Neighbors say they're brothers. It was the younger boy who called 911, and reported the child had been shot in the mouth.

Police confirm the 11-year-old was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the face.

He was taken to MCV Hospital by medflight and is in stable condition at this time. The boy reportedly suffered an obstructed airway, but no brain damage is expected, according to the Amelia Bulletin Monitor. The paper also reports the child attends Amelia County Middle School.

Neighbors describe the family as very kind, both the mom and dad serving in the military. NBC12 reached out to the family. However, a gentleman at the residence declined to comment, at this time.

The Amelia County Sheriff's Office isn't releasing many details, citing an ongoing investigation.
