Blue Devils Host Va. Tech on Valentine's Day

Setting the Scene...
Returning home to Cameron Indoor Stadium, the Duke women's basketball team (11-12, 3-8 ACC) will host Virginia Tech (15-8, 2-8) Thursday, Feb. 14 on Valentine's Day at 7 p.m.
The game will be aired live on RSN-TV with Jenn Hildreth (PXP) and Kelley Deyo (Color) calling the game. It will also be carried on the Duke Sports Network via 620 AM, 99.3 FM, 96.5 FM, TuneIn app and www.GoDuke.com with Chris Edwards (PXP) on the air beginning at 6:45 p.m. (ET).
There will be a special Wine & Paint Night from 5:30-6:30 p.m., for $25 per person. Food and wine will be served in Scharf Hall.

What is Next?...
After being off for the weekend, the Blue Devils will travel to Notre Dame to take on the Irish Thursday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m., live on ACC Network Extra.

Three Keys...
Haley Gorecki is the only player in the ACC to rank in the top 15 in all four categories (points, rebounds, steals and assists) and one of three in power five conferences to rank in the top 15 in all four categories in her conference (Bridget Carleton of Iowa State, Sabrina Ionescu of Oregon).
Haley Gorecki has averaged 21.4 points, 10.0 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 3.2 steals over the last five games. Gorecki notched four straight double-doubles with one also being a triple-double. She was the first Duke player to notch four straight double-doubles since Azura Stevens in 2015-16.
Haley Gorecki is averaging 21.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 4.0 steals on the season against ranked opponents. She had a season-high 26 points against Syracuse. Gorecki is the only ACC player to boast an average of 20.0 points and 6.0 rebounds against ranked opponents.

Storylines/Other Blue Devil Notes...
Haley Gorecki ranks 18th nationally with a 3.0 steals per game average.
Leaonna Odom owns 913 points over her career and needs 87 points to become the 34th Duke player to reach the 1,000-point mark.
Haley Gorecki is currently averaging 36.2 minutes per game, which leads the ACC. Katie Meier holds the Duke record for highest per game average (36.0, 1989-90).
Jade Williams had 15 points, eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and three blocks against Pittsburgh. She is one of only three players in the ACC to notch 15-8-3-3-3 in a game in 2018-19 (Brianna Turner of Notre Dame, Emily Engstler of Syracuse).
Miela Goodchild ranks eighth nationally with a 45.5 three-point field goal percentage. She has the second-highest percentage by a freshman behind Virginia Tech's Dara Mabrey (48.7).
Miela Goodchild currently ranks third in the ACC with a 45.5 three-point field goal percentage and 10th with a 2.2 three-pointers per game average.
• Forced to play more of a point guard role since the injury to Mikayla Boykin, Leaonna Odom dished a career-high nine assists at Boston College.
Haley Gorecki's 69 steals on the season ranks tied 16th nationally.
Jade Williams drained her first collegiate three-pointer on her first attempt of the season at Boston College.
Haley Gorecki leads the ACC for most double-doubles by a guard with seven.
Miela Goodchild tied a Duke freshman record with 11 three-pointers attempted in a single game versus Wake Forest. Her 112 three-pointers attempted on the season ranks third on the Blue Devil freshman charts.
• Redshirt freshman Mikayla Boykin had surgery Jan. 22, after tearing her right ACL in the Miami contest on Jan. 17. She will miss the remainder of the 2018-19 campaign.
Haley Gorecki's nine games with 20 or more points ranks tied fourth in the ACC.
• Senior Faith Suggs leads the Blue Devils with nine charges taken on the season and 13 over her four year career. She has taken eight charges over the last 13 games.
• Duke held Wisconsin (53), Marist (56), UNLV (38), FGCU (41) and NC State (63) to season low points.
• Duke's Haley Gorecki, Syracuse's Tiana Mangakahia and Notre Dame's Jackie Young are the only players in the ACC to have a triple-double this season.
• Redshirt junior Haley Gorecki and freshman Miela Goodchild have combined to drain 92 three-pointers on the season.

A Look at Virginia Tech...
Virginia Tech enters the contest Thursday with a 15-8 overall and 2-8 league mark under head coach Kenny Brooks.  The Hokies have been led by Taylor Emery (17.4 points, 47 treys), Regan Magarity (13.8 points, 12.3 rebounds), Dara Mabrey (12.6 points, 58 treys) and Trinity Baptiste (10.1 points, 7.3 rebounds) on the season.  Virginia Tech is averaging 9.4 three-pointers per game.

The Series with Virginia Tech..
Duke and Virginia Tech will meet for the 28th time in school history with the Blue Devils leading the series, 25-2. The Blue Devils have posted 23 straight wins in the series. In games played in Cameron Indoor Stadium, Duke has tallied a 13-1 record with 11 straight wins. Coach P has collected a 17-1 record versus the Hokies.

Duke Players Versus Virginia Tech..
In her only game against the Hokies, Haley Gorecki tallied 28 points on 9-of-14 shooting last season in Blacksburg, Va. She hit 7-of-10 three-pointers and had six rebounds.

Freshmen Three-Point Shooters...
Two of the top ACC freshmen three-point shooters will be on display in Cameron Thursday with Duke's Miela Goodchild along with Virginia Tech's Dara Mabrey.  Mabrey has drained 58 treys, while Goodchild has sank 51. Both rank in the top 10 nationally in three-point percentage as well.

Against ACC Foes...
Haley Gorecki is playing some of her best basketball against ACC opponents averaging 18.9 points, 4.8 assists, 7.8 rebounds, 3.2 steals.  In the ACC rankings, she is third in scoring, tied ninth in rebounding,second in assists and first in steals.
Gorecki became the first Duke player in school history to register 26 points, 10 rebounds and six steals in an ACC contest against Syracuse.

From Downtown...
Prior to hitting 4-of-15 three-pointers at Virginia, Duke had hit 26-of-57 three-pointers for a 45.6 percentage over the previous three games. This included draining 10 treys in back-to-back games against Pitt and Boston College.
Duke had not hit 10 three-pointers in a game all season and over the previous four games the Blue Devils had hit only 20 three-pointers (20-of-55).

Goodchild Nets Career High...
Freshman Miela Goodchild scored a career-high 23 points at Boston College as she hit a career-high 5-of-6 treys for an 80.0 percentage. She backed that up with 20 points on 6-of-9 treys against Pitt. Her six three-pointers made against Pitt matched Rebecca Greenwell's Duke freshman record.

She had scored double-digits in five straight contests, prior to having four points at Virginia. Goodchild is the seventh Duke freshman to post 20+ points in consecutive games and the fifth to do it against ACC opponents. The last Blue Devil to accomplish this was Azura Stevens in 2015.
