Things to Do for a Sunny Fall Weekend

The weather is supposed to be sunny and clear this weekend and we are nearing the peak of the fall foliage. Why not take a walk, a hike, or spend some time at a local fair or festival?

Here are some ideas:

Happenings at Muscoot Farm: The Westchester Basketmakers Guild will hold an exhibition of their works in the Main House Gallery from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays in October. This Sunday, there will be the weekly Famers Market from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., which features more than 20 vendors. There will also be an Autumn Celebration from noon to 3 p.m. with music, games, hayrides, and a show of Model A cars. The celebration is free, but there is a fee for the hayride. Muscoot Farm is on Route 100 in Somers.

Story Jam@Sunnyside. Come for an evening of listening to master storytellers tell their tales at Washington Irving’s home, Sunnyside, in Tarrytown at 7:30 p.m. this Saturday. With the home of America’s founding father of literature as a backdrop, you'll lose yourself in a range of human experiences – adventures and embarrassments, loves and joys, achievements and defeats. The New York Sheep and Wool Show. This Saturday and Sunday, the Dutchess Country Fairgrounds in Rhinebeck will be the site for one of the biggest celebrations of sheep, wool, and yarn in the country. See sheep of all breeds, along with goats, sheepdogs, llamas and alpacas, demonstrations, and all types of crafts that are wooly or not so wooly. For more information, click here.

Folk Legends in Beacon: The American Center for Folk Music will present the Folk Legends Concert at 4 p.m. Sunday at Long Dock Park in Beacon. The free concert features Tom Chapin, John McCutcheon, and Joe Louis Walker. For more information, click here.

TarryHallow Walking Tours: Learn about the unique history of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow with a walking tour by The Historical Society at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The two-hour tour will start at Patriots Park and will take you past historic sites and buildings with guides who will share stories of the people who lived in there, along with tales of a few unexplained events. Fall Festival: The Greenburgh Nature Center will hold its Annual Fall Festival on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. You can build a scarecrow, carve or paint a pumpkin, make cider, enjoy a hayride, listen to Native American storytelling in the new longhouse, and more. Dinos and Ghosts (or the Ghosts of Dinos): Haunted Trains and Dinosaurs are on tap at Lasdon Park, Arboretum, and Veterans Memorial on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day. The Ninth Annual Halloween Train Show will take place in the Main House with a huge railroad layout that includes Hogwarts Castle among other features. Outside, there will be a dinosaur garden with the resident T. rex available for photos. Visitors can explore the trail and see some of the thrills of the season. Tractor-drawn wagon rides will be available every half hour. The main garden will also feature a display of mums and the Westchester Veterans Museum will be open. Tour Haverstraw: The Historical Society of Rockland County and the Town of Haverstraw Quadricentennial Committee will hold the 2016 Historic Homes & Landmarks Tour: 400 Years of Haverstraw! The tour is on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ticket pick up and purchase ticket at Haverstraw Town Hall, One Rosman Road, Garnerville Price: $40 in advance ($45, day of event).
