Bayonne Bridge to close Friday night, reopen Saturday

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The Bayonne Bridge is scheduled to close Friday night, March 3, but will re-open Saturday night, March 4.

The Port Authority will close the bridge Friday at 9 p.m. and it will remain closed until Saturday at 10 p.m. to accommodate ongoing construction of the "Raise the Roadway" project.

The Bayonne Bridge's new elevated roadway opened to drivers on Feb. 20. All traffic crossing Route 440 between Bayonne nd Staten Island is directed by signs to the bridge's new approach roadways and over the elevated span.

When the new elevated roadway opened, so did a new system for collecting tolls at the 85-year-old arch bridge -- cashless tolling. Drivers no longer have to slow down or stop at a toll booth and are able to continue driving through the crossing at the posted speed limit.

The bridge, which had been closed during the week between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., will now remain open most weekdays. However, overnight closures Monday through Thursday, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., will continue.

All closures are weather-dependent.

On some weekdays, the Bayonne Bridge will open a half-hour earlier at 4:30 a.m. to provide an alternate route for drivers affected by traffic holds on the Goethals Bridge.

The traffic holds on the Goethals Bridge, which were introduced last year, affect both directions of traffic three days a week from 4:30 to 5 a.m. They are necessary to accommodate ongoing construction on the Goethals Bridge Replacement Project.
