Tech paychecks continue to increase in size quickly, but which tech workers actually earn the most? Perhaps surprisingly, not those in the engineering-related top roles. That's according to compensation and workplace culture site Comparably, which this month released its ranking of the 10 popular tech jobs that pay more than $150,000.
The report looked at the average salary records — not including stocks or equity — of more than 12,000 employees working in tech jobs in small, midsize and large tech companies across the country. The firm collected data between October 2018 and October 2019.
For each job, the Santa Monica, Calif.-based firm included a description of the role, a list of skills necessary to qualify and the average salary. The report also included a "compensation by location" table that compares the average salary for the 10 roles in major tech hubs to the average rent.
The report noted that people with such titles as “vice president of operations” and “vice president of business development” were compensated the best in Boston, compared with the six markets that the study took into account (San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, Boston and Austin).
“The average computer or tech-related job in this country pays just over $91,000. The median household income for all U.S. jobs is just over $63,000. It doesn’t take an IT hotshot to do the math implied and come to the conclusion that the tech industry is still the hottest market around,” Comparably noted.
