For pop-culture geeks, this weekend is a high school reunion, Christmas and Halloween rolled into one.

The annual Motor City Comic Con kicked off Friday at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, expecting to draw tens of thousands into its sensory overload of superheroes, sci-fi stars and memorabilia dealers.

Continuing through Sunday, it offers countless comic books, a nearly endless array of pop-culture ephemera and a long list of celebrities signing autographs and posing for pics (though usually not for free). The big names in attendance this year range from Capt. Kirk (William Shatner, Sunday only), Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), the Incredible Hulk (Lou Ferrigno) and a bunch of zombies and zombie killers (10 members of "The Walking Dead" cast).

Dressing up is encouraged – we see you Wonder Woman – but not required. If past years are any indication, a few things you'll want in your utility belt: the patience to deal with long lines, a wad or two of cash and whole lot of youthful enthusiasm.

Friday highlights included a "Karate Kid" panel discussion that included stars Ralph Macchio, Wiliam Zabka and Martin Kove. And organizers reported that Englund was an early fan favorite, drawing big lines for autographs -- which he signed while wearing signature Freddy Krueger claws.
