Simon Cowell has responded to claims that he is "gay" following the collapse of Tulisa Contostavlos's drug trial.

Contostavlos's PA Gareth Varey was heard telling undercover Sun on Sunday reporter Mazher Mahmood that he knows men who have slept with Cowell, in a recording played to the court.

A spokesperson for Cowell had suggested that a statement would be forthcoming once the trial had concluded.

The statement read: "Simon was referred to during the trial without forewarning, resulting in widespread media coverage of untrue claims regarding his private life.

"In 2014 the question of whether someone is or is not gay is antiquated. (As it happens he isn't, though if he were, he would simply have said so).

"However, the issue was the false suggestion made by Mr Varey that Simon - who is renowned for his honesty and candidness - had thus not been truthful in the public arena and this is what we have been obliged to clarify."

Earlier today (July 21), Judge Alistair McCreath confirmed that Contostavlos's trial had collapsed as he had reason to believe Mahmood may have lied giving evidence. He has been suspended from The Sun pending further investigation.

Contostavlos thanked her fans and lawyers following the trial's collapse, and said that she is "looking forward" to resuming her career. She has aways vehemently denied the allegations against her.
