On Wednesday at 3:00 pm, the Alger County Sheriff’s office was dispatched to Whitefish Point Rd in Onota Twp. for a possible drowning victim.

Dennis D. Kamento, 73, of Gahanna, Ohio, was swimming at the beach off of Whitefish Point Road. He was pulled in by an undertow. Despite efforts of family and neighbors, Kamento ultimately drowned.

The U.S. Coast Guard located his body approximately 50 yards off shore and was able to recover him.

Kamento was airlifted into the Coast Guard Helicopter and transported to UP Health Systems in Marquette, but was pronounced dead during the transport.

The Alger County Sheriff’s Office would like to warn all beach goers to use extreme caution when swimming in Lake Superior when the wind and wave conditions are strong.

Responding agencies included the Alger County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Alger County Rescue 21 dive team, Onota Twp. Fire Department and the Autrain Twp. Fire Department.
