Hand in Hand holds delicious fundraiser for kids
Friday, Feb. 9 is the date set for the next yummy fundraiser for Hand in Hand, Inc. It will be from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at Grovestone Baptist Church and cost $7. The menu is homemade chicken and dumplings, fried apples, green beans, rolls, tea or coffee and dessert. Carry-out meals are available at 775-5602 and 777-9543.
All funds are given to the schools in the Owen District for the use of students who don't have all they need to have a good school day. Hand in Hand, Inc. is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization.
Ten Thousand Villages donates to area students through MLK program
From 1-5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, Ten Thousand Villages Montreat is contributing 15 percent of sales to the Swannanoa Valley Dr. Martin Luther King., Jr. Scholarship Program. The program provides scholarships and financial aid for Swannanoa Valley high school seniors planning to enroll in or return to a two- or four-year college full-time. Ten Thousand Villages is at 303 Lookout Road, Montreat.
Get tickets to the MLK prayer breakfast
The 28th annual Swannanoa Valley Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Prayer Breakfast will be at 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10 at Camp Dorothy Walls on Cragmont Road in Black Mountain. Pastor George Logan, a native of Black Mountain, will be the keynote speaker. Tickets - $15 adults, $6 ages 3-12 - are available at svmlk.org. Money raised will go to outstanding Swannanoa Valley High School students for the 2018-19 school year.
Duplicate bridge group posts results
The Lake Tomahawk Duplicate Bridge Group played at the Lakeview Center on Lake Tomahawk in Black Mountain on Jan. 30 and had a great time. Tied for first were Lynda Briggs/Roger Fenna. Coming in second were Helen Kraus/Walt Tolley. Coming in third were Elizabeth Lovejoy/Ed Zawaki. AARP offers its annual help with taxes
Through April 17, the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide in cooperation with the IRS, NC Department of Revenue, Buncombe County Library System and Council on Aging, Inc. will offer free tax preparations for taxpayers of low and moderate income, with special attention to those 60 and older.
Both federal and NC tax returns will be electronically filed. Tax preparers will be at Black Mountain Library on Thursdays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Taxpayers should bring the following documents:
- Photo I.D. for taxpayer and spouse
- Social Security cards or equivalent for all taxpayers and dependents
- Proof of health insurance coverage: Medicare A or C, Medicaid, CHIP, government, employer, individual, or Marketplace (Form 1095-A, B, C, Exemption Certificate)
- Previous year’s income tax return
- W-2 forms from each employer
- 1099 forms for income from Social Security, Pension, Interest, Dividends, Brokers/Mutual Funds, Miscellaneous
- Income, Gambling Winnings (Form W-2G) and any other income
- Detailed list and receipts for Medical Expenses, Charitable Contributions, Real Estate Taxes and Mortgage Interest
- Form 1098 if you are claiming itemized expenses
- Any other tax forms or information for both income and expenses
- A voided check for direct deposit of any refund to your checking or savings account
Precinct Democrats to hold annual cluster meeting
The 2018 Annual Cluster Meeting of Black Mountain Area Democratic Precincts will be 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Feb. 17 at Cragmont Assembly, 1233 North Fork Road, Black Mountain. The meeting is for registered Democrats who vote at Owen Middle School, Black Mountain Primary School, Black Mountain Elementary School, Lake Tomahawk, Carver Community Center, Montreat Conference Center (Walkup Building) and Garren Creek Fire Department.
Auction for the Arts tickets are on sale
Tickets are on sale for 13th annual Auction for the Arts, the nonprofit Black Mountain Center for the Arts' biggest fundraiser. Tickets are $30. This lively event - Saturday, March 3 - begins at 6 p.m. with a catered buffet dinner and a silent auction. The live auction at 7 p.m. is in the theater.
Items as diverse as a brand-new bike, vacation rentals, jewelry and furniture are up for bid. Proceeds help fund the art center's several programs and classes throughout the year.
