Sisters Start Vintage Goods Store In Keymar, Md.

KEYMAR, Md. (AP) -- Originally, a business wasn't in Kasha Bomysoad and Michele Reese's plans.

But the sisters seized an opportunity that became available and are now owners of Red Caboose Vintage Goods & Furnishings store in Keymar.

Red Caboose sells housewares, furniture, knickknacks and collectibles.

"We had no plans to start this business at the time we did," Bomysoad said. "We were literally in the right place at the right time."

During a visit to the shop, the former owner told Bomysoad and Reese she wanted to retire.

"As we left the shop, we realized that this was for us and something we should pursue," Bomysoad said.

The duo took over Aug. 1.

The shop occupies a 100-year-old former grain mill, totaling about 9,000 square feet with three levels.

"We have such a variety of merchandise we are able to cater to many different tastes," Bomysoad said. "We have opened our shop to local vendors who provide an assortment of goods in their individual booths."

In the Spring, Red Caboose will introduce an outside garden area, featuring garden furniture, flowers, fruits and vegetables.

A red caboose that sits outside the shop has attracted a lot of interest including offers to buy it, the sisters said.

"The biggest coincidence is that we already had the caboose, so when we pondered names, that was the obvious choice, plus, the building is next to the railroad tracks," Reese said.

Bomysoad and Reese are the only employees, assisted by their sister Annette Kessler whenever she can.

The business partners said they have the drive, energy, ideas and positive attitude to be successful.

"It's a great place," Reese said. "We offer a cozy atmosphere where you can enjoy a hot beverage, an array of good music, great customer service, plus there's a room with cable television to entertain the children."

Plans are to launch Red Caboose Art & Framing in the shop's lower level.

"Our plans are to feature local artists in addition to offering custom framing and pre-framed art," Reese said.
