CRESTON, Mont. (AP) - The U.S. Fish and wildlife Service has closed a pond near Creston to all boating access due to contamination from an invasive mussel.

The Daily Inter Lake reports (https://bit.ly/2fkQUKD ) that Jessup Mill Pond has been closed while hatchery managers await sampling results to see if the mussel contamination in the Tiber and Canyon Ferry reservoirs has reached the Flathead.

Hatchery manager Mark Maskill said Wednesday that the closure is a precautionary measure.

Water sampling this fall produced a positive test for the larvae of quagga or zebra mussels at Tiber, the first such positive test in the state. Water tests at Canyon Ferry were inconclusive.

The mussels have caused problems in the Midwest and Great Lakes regions, where they have clogged irrigation and hydropower infrastructure and negatively impacted aquatic wildlife.
