Alan Dershowitz, on Qatar and Israel
To the Editor:
Re “In Charm Offensive, Qatar Is Pushing for a Comeback in Washington” (news article, Feb. 10):
You say “Alan Dershowitz, a prominent lawyer, called Qatar the ‘Israel of the Gulf States.’ ” In my article in The Hill, I made it clear that I was comparing Qatar to Israel in only one way: insofar as Qatar is “surrounded by enemies, subject to boycotts and unrealistic demands, and struggling for its survival.”
I never intended to compare Israel, a vibrant democracy, to any Gulf monarchy. The thrust of my article was that a “good idea might be the establishment of an independent commission of credible experts to resolve the conflicting factual claims about what Qatar is and is not doing.”
