Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal is demanding that federal investigators look into companies that make so called “detox” teas.

Blumenthal says the products are being marketed by celebrities to teens and young adults via social media as a product for wellness and weight loss.

Medical experts say the teas can actually be dangerous and lead to short term side effects.

“With detox teas, there is no clinical evidence that shows they help with weight loss and these products are not FDA regulated, and as a result, they have toxins that can be very dangerous,” said Blumenthal.

According to consumer reports, many detox teas use diuretics, laxatives and stimulants to induce weight loss.
