Unsurprisingly, seaside resorts and market towns come top in a list of places to retire compiled by Experian. The data firm analysed demographic statistics for the UK to find places that not only had the highest proportion of over-60s, but offered attractive surroundings, greenery and a low crime rate. Many of the top locations are also buzzy, with excellent shops and restaurants, and a lively cultural scene.

Property prices tend to be high — but that’s less of an issue for baby-booming downsizers, thanks to all the equity they have amassed in their homes.

Top of their retirement hotspots is the yachtie haven of Salcombe, which has stunning scenery, excellent seafood and some of the most expensive homes in any seaside resort in Britain.
