A man is being treated for gunshot wounds after an altercation Monday afternoon.

Police were called to the 3300 block of North Portage Avenue around 4 p.m. When they arrived, they found a person fleeing from the scene. That person was apprehended and taken in for questioning.

Shortly afterward, a man showed up at the hospital with at least two gunshot wounds to the abdomen

Police say everything happened inside the store

"What we've learned so far through the initial investigation is that there was some kind of struggle that took place and that during that struggled the shots were fired," South Bend Police Department spokesman Ken Garcia said. "That is when the fight broke up, and that is when we had somebody show up at the hospital."

Police have not provided an update on the victim's condition.

Officers are looking through surveillance footage as part of their investigation.
