Police in San Antonio, Texas, said a Good Samaritan was shot and killed trying to stop a jewelry store robber in a local mall on Sunday afternoon.

Police respond to a shooting inside the Rolling Oaks Mall in San Antonio on Jan. 22, 2017.

One man was killed and seven others injured in the shooting at Rolling Oaks Mall. Police said one of the gunmen was wounded by another bystander, but that the second gunman escaped and remained at large.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus called the shooting "a robbery gone really, really bad," the San Antonio Express-News reported. The two men attempted to rob a Kay Jewelers at the mall and encountered two "Good Samaritans" who tried to stop them, McManus said. One of the suspects shot and killed one of the pair.

McManus said the second bystander, who had a concealed carry license, pulled his gun and shot the gunman, wounding him. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, KENS-TV reported. The second suspect ran back into the mall, shooting as he ran. He injured six people and was still at large, police said.

The mall, in the northeast part of town off North Loop 1604 East, was locked down, but police said they believed the second suspect escaped and that everyone inside the mall was safe. The injured included one person who suffered a heart attack and a woman went into labor, WOAI-TV reported.
