A quick look at some of the top news and notes this morning.

5. Memorial Day travel

In the Washington metro area, the worst time to travel for this Memorial Day weekend is almost here, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic. The worst travel time will be between 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Thursday, with traffic delays 2.3 times the normal travel time.

Based on historic patterns, travelers in Virginia will encounter “periods of moderate to heavy congestion between noon and 6 p.m. on Friday and Monday, and during midday on Saturday and Sunday,” the Virginia Department of Transportation is forecasting. Holiday travelers will also run into “heavy congestion on Interstate 95 south and Interstate 64 east from Saturday morning to Saturday afternoon, and on I-95 north and I-64 west on Monday from around noon to late evening.”

4. Washington Capitals heading to finals

The Washington Capitals are heading to the Stanley Cup Finals after defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning, 4-0, Wednesday night. Game 1 against the Golden Knights will be at 8 p.m. Monday in Las Vegas. The series includes two games in Washington beginning Saturday, June 2.

3. Buckle up on the bus

The NTSB wants states to create legislation mandating lap and shoulder belts in new large school buses, reports WJLA.

“We think school buses are the best way to transport kids to school, but we can see they could be even safer,” said Michele Beckjord, a senior project manager and survival factors investigator. (WJLA)

2. Man travels once-a-week to assault 13-year-old boy

A Reston man is accused of traveling to Ellicott City, Maryland, repeatedly over the last five months to sexually abuse a 13-year-old boy. Joseph Coffinberger, 32, of Royal Fern Court, has been charged with rape and sexual solicitation of a minor.

Howard County police are concerned he may have victimized other children in the region and are asking anyone with information to call 410-313-2630 or email HCPDcrimetips@howardcountymd.gov.

1.Homeless shelter moves to Macy’s

The Carpenter’s Shelter, a homeless shelter in Old Town Alexandria, is moving temporarily to space in the former Macy’s at Landmark Mall, reports NBC Washington.

Construction crews have been working since March to convert 16,000 square feet on the second floor of the Macy's building to serve the more than 600 homeless and formerly homeless children and adults whom Carpenter's Shelter sees each year. (NBC4)
