WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Changes are coming to a busy Wichita street due to the new baseball stadium.
Wichita City Council members approved a plan that would change McLean from a four lane to a two lane road between Maple and Douglas. The space saved by the narrowing would be used to further develop the land nearest the river.
“It’s definitely something we don’t want to shut down and we definitely don’t forsee any major traffic obstacles by narrowing it from four lane down to two lane,” vice mayor Jeff Blubaugh said Tuesday.
A traffic study found 10,000 vehicles travel every day on McLean Boulevard.
“From what the city engineers have told us, we will be just fine with two lanes because it will handle all our traffic needs for at least 10 years,” Delano Neighborhood Association president Vincent Hancock said.
Hancock is looking forward to the development in the area adding to the Delano neighborhood.
“That’s one of the things we’re liking about this, is we’ll be able to rework that green space to the tune of three million dollars and to really make it a centerpiece,” Hancock said.
Council members also gave the greenlight on the next phase of the stadium project. They voted to spend $11 million for masonry, roofing and glass. The vote was 7-0.
