According to Virginia State Police, the school bus was activating its hazard lights and stop bar to pick up students when a 2016 Honda CRV, being driven by 76-year-old Elizabeth Overby, of Sutherland, struck the rear of the bus.

The bus was transporting a total of 33 students to both Dinwiddie High and Dinwiddie Middle schools. Five of the students were transported to Southside Regional Medical Center for with minor injuries after complaining of back pain, according to police.

Overby was also hospitalized with minor injuries.

A school spokesperson told 8News that parents were notified and the bus driver followed proper protocol.

“The students are doing well,” Royal Gurley, Assistant Superintendent for Dinwiddie County Public Schools told 8News. “We rehearse for these types of things, the driver responded correctly, she made sure the students were doing well and assisted EMS and the transportation department.”

Another bus responded to the scene to transport the students to their respective schools.
