Pa. woman spent almost a week in jail for a crime she didn’t commit in Texas, where she’d never been

A Philadelphia woman was jailed for several days after Texas law enforcement erroneously issued an arrest warrant in her name.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Julie Hudson, 31, went to a Philadelphia police station to clear up a warrant that had been issued for her arrest in Webster, Texas.

Instead, Hudson was arrested, and spent the next six days in jail before the error was corrected.

Click2Houston reported that Webster police were searching for a woman named Julie Hudson, who they believe was involved in a shoplifting incident. Webster police then issued an arrest warrant for Julie Hudson of Philadelphia after comparing her social media photos to images of the suspect seen in the surveillance footage of that incident.

Hudson is a Ph.D. student with no criminal record and had never been to Texas. She was working at the time of the incident.

According to NBC 10, Hudson became aware of the warrant for her arrest after she had applied for jobs and been denied as a result. While she was held in jail, she went several days without her necessary medication.

The Inquirer reported that Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner told Hudson, “As an institution, law enforcement owes you an apology.”
