'No story is a bad story': Southeast Texas authors showcased their work at the Port Arthur Public Library

“When you have something in your heart to create, create it."

PORT ARTHUR, Texas — A Saturday event in Port Arthur gave a group of authors a chance to share their stories.

Art comes in many forms and one of the oldest is storytelling. At the Port Arthur Public Library, a group of Southeast Texas authors showcased their work and accomplishments.

“When you have something in your heart to create, create it,” Jimmie Barnes, author of Red Bone, said.

The authors who attended Saturday’s event talked about the long process it takes to write a book.

"It was a very good experience,” Michele Malonson, author of Cruise Blues: Tips for your Trips, said.  "It was a learning experience, but I’m very proud of my published work.”

Malonson spent three months writing her book and was more than happy to showcase her hard work while also learning from other authors.

“It’s an honor for me to be able to gain my experience and to also gain some knowledge of other authors who have done this before me,” Malonson said.

Many authors agree that finishing a book takes hard work, but the end result makes it all worth it. Barnes said nothing beats seeing his name on the front cover of Red Bone.

“I’ve never had a feeling quite like the first time when I opened up the first box and saw what I had taken from my mind and made a reality,” Barnes said.

Every story starts somewhere. The Southeast Texas authors' advice to young aspiring authors is simply to start.

"Start. Put pen to paper and start," Malonson said. "No story is a bad story. Work on it every day and you will perfect it."

Those who were not able to go to the library still have an opportunity to go see, check out, and purchase the books showcased Saturday.
