Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse will hire Michael Johnson Sr. as its next wide receivers coach, according to a report by ESPN.
The hire would round out the 10 full-time, on-field assistant coaches for the 2022 season.
Johnson, a Los Angeles native who turns 55 in May, has coached in the NFL and at multiple Power-Five schools in the Pac-12 and SEC.
He spent last season at Florida Atlantic as a co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach and was set to coach tight ends this year for the Owls.
Prior to his time at FAU, Johnson spent the 2019 season at Mississippi State when Garrett Shrader quarterbacked the team.
Johnson’s son, Michael Jr., is a former four-star quarterback recruit who signed with Penn State out of high school. He then transferred to Florida Atlantic ahead of the 2020 season but has not played.
Johnson Sr. previously coached his son in high school as well.
Johnson Jr. will be a redshirt sophomore in 2022 with three seasons of elgibility remaining. If Johnson were to transfer a second time, he’d need an NCAA waiver or to graduate in May in order to be eligible to compete next season.
