YORK City interim manager Michael Morton has aspirations of seeing the Minstermen back in the football league.

Morton's side suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Vanarama National League leaders Wrexham, who are currently three points ahead of Notts County in the table with a game in hand.

But despite Wrexham's imminent promotion, Morton is keen to see York play at the same heights as the Red Dragons, despite City currently contesting against relegation.

“It’s a great experience, just a disappointing result. We were talking there and it was like a football league game, and to be fair that’s where Wrexham want to be and it’s where we want to be.

"Hopefully one day we’ll see Wrexham and York playing in the football league against each other.

“I was speaking to Macca [Tony McMahon, interim assistant manager] right there and it’s all the little things they do.

"The majority of their players have had that experience and their management team as well know how to get wins.

"But I think it’s all the little things they do in terms of experience, they know how to move the ball quick and they know when to get it forward.

"They’re dangerous with their throws and that’s always been how Parky [Phil Parkinson, Wrexham manager] likes to play.

"But you can just see the quality.

“I think you look at their performance and they’ve been doing it all season, but we knew it wasn’t going to be an easy game.

"All we wanted to do was stay in the game, but with that first goal we knew we had to open up at some point.

"We weren’t coming here to just get beat 1-0, we were coming to go and have a go.

"We made the changes to give Shaq [Forde] and Maz [Maziar Kouhyar] a bit more time and get them on the pitch, but I thought we were having a bit of a foothold, and then obviously we got done by a long throw and I still think we could have defended better."
