About this time every year, I find on my windows lots of nose smudges created by my peering out at the gardening and landscaping projects I wish I were working on while the cold wind keeps me indoors. I suspect I am not alone in my eagerness to get the gardening season underway (nose smudges aside).

Fortunately for those of us impatiently waiting for spring, Garfield County Master Gardeners will be hosting a workshop titled “Love Your Landscape” 8:30 a.m. to noon April 6 at Autry Technology Center. Please come and enjoy the company of many folks who love their landscapes and gardens. Three outstanding speakers will offer helpful and inspiring tips and information we can apply to our outdoor projects. Let’s wipe those nose smudges off our windows and get the season started in style. Bring a friend or two.

A presentation titled “Gardening Styling” by Beth Teel, from Tulsa, will provide ideas to add special touches to establish your own style in your garden. Beth teaches classes in her garden, which has been featured in many garden tours as well as “Oklahoma Gardener” magazine, Tulsa World and OETA’s “Oklahoma Gardening” television program.

Emphasizing the importance of choosing the right plants, Mike Schnelle, from Oklahoma State University, will present “Superior Ornamentals for Enid and Surrounding Areas.” Mike is extension specialist and Shackelford Endowed Professor of Floriculture in the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture at OSU and specializes in floriculture and woody plant production and culture.

David Starks, of Enid, will focus on trees in his presentation “Selection, Planting and Pruning.” Starting in the tree service industry in 1994, Starks became an International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certified arborist in 1996. He opened Starks Tree Care in 2005, and became Oklahoma’s first Certified Treecare Safety Professional (CTSP) in 2006.

Each workshop participant will receive a folder containing flower seed packets and information handouts supporting the presentations as well as pamphlets identifying Oklahoma Proven plants, those trees, shrubs, flowers and grasses tested and proven to tolerate conditions in Oklahoma. A soil test bag from Oklahoma State University and a pamphlet explaining the proper way to collect a soil sample will be available for those interested. Resources provided to be helpful in a variety of gardening activities.

Along with drawings for door prizes, there will be a boutique featuring gardening books, gloves, seed packets, plants and other gardening-related items for sale. Inaugurating our new greenhouse, Master Gardeners have started about 100 tomato plants to be sold in the boutique.

Refreshments will be provided during breaks between presentations.

Proceeds from the workshop go to fund several projects of Garfield County Master Gardeners, including the demonstration garden and the children’s garden at the Oklahoma State University Extension Office, 316 E. Oxford.

Advanced registration is recommended, but registrations will be welcomed at the door. To register in advance, contact the OSU Extension Office at (580) 237-1228.
