The String Cheese Incident are in the midst of a run of shows at Asheville, NC’s Salvage Station. On Thursday, the Colorado-bred jamband nodded to their local surroundings by busting out Peter Rowan’s “Trail of Tears” for the first time since their July 29, 2004 appearance at the Uptown Theatre in Kansas City, MO. The tune, which appears on Rowan’s 1988 album with the Nashville Bluegrass Band New Moon Rising, opens with the lyrics, “In the great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina/ That’s where I have rambled for many long years/In the great smoky mountains in North Carolina/ I’ve followed the trail of tears…ooo..”

The ensemble also nodded to their surroundings in Chicago on April 28. While performing at the Riviera , the group played with a bit of hometown heroes Umphrey’s McGee’s Chicago anthem “In the Kitchen” during a jam out of ” Got What He Wanted.”

String Cheese will conclude their Asheville run tonight.
