Washoe County Health District releases update on mosquito treatment

RENO, Nev. (KRNV) — The Washoe County Health District (WCHD)- Vector Borne Disease Program (VBD) is planning their environmentally friendly aerial mosquito abatement for late June or early July.

This year the mosquito abatement is delayed due to the previous helicopter company closing following the owner's retirement. WCHD is bringing a new vendor to provide the aerial treatment to the wetlands and other water sources in the area.

“This time of year, residents have come to expect aerial treatment of public areas where mosquitoes are prevalent, such as the North Valleys, Spanish Springs, the Damonte Ranch area and Washoe Lake,” said Kevin Dick, District Health Officer in Washoe County. “We apologize for the delay as we work through these unfortunate circumstances out of our control but pledge to provide this important public health service as soon as possible. In the meantime, we urge residents to be vigilant against mosquitoes to prevent West Nile virus (WNV) in our community.”

According to the VBD program, the mosquito numbers for the season appear to be low-to-average due to the constant rain, flowing water and moderate regional temperatures.

Residents are advised to wear long sleeves and pants to cover skin and prevent mosquito bites. Avoiding recreational activities in the early morning or evening hours is also advised to prevent mosquito bites.

The WCHD is working on new ways to decrease mosquito populations. They have purchased an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and is working with the Federal Aviation Administration to plan out industry-standard procedure for larviciding.
