Sandy Creek Nature Center is commemorating its 50th anniversary this year and while a number of notable events have already occurred through the first half of 2023, there’s still more to come.

Visitors to the Nature Center are invited to enjoy hikes in its 225 acres of woodlands and wetlands, visit the Education & Visitors Center and take in the other amenities on offer.

“That’s one of the great things about the Nature Center,” said Emily Carr, president of the Sandy Creek Nature Center’s board of directors. “I do trail guiding with students that come out and I always remind them to come back with their families because they can walk the trails, we have a nature playscape out back, you can bring your bike to the Greenway and you don’t have to worry about traffic, and the exhibit hall is free. There are a lot of things to do.”

Recently, the Nature Center hosted Snake Day and Carr said that between 600 and 700 people were on hand.

Thus far this year, the Nature Center held an open house and celebration in March, Athentic Brewery rolled out Trail Hopper Ale in recognition of the center’s 50th anniversary and a call was issued to collect art inspired by nature (with an art show at the Athens-Clarke County Library set for July).

Other events planned for the coming months include the annual membership meeting (also known as “Pie Day”) on Sept. 24, the Jack-O’-Lantern Jog 5K on Oct. 16, a bird seed sale fundraiser in November and the burying of a time capsule (to be opened in 50 years) in December.

“It has been a very busy year,” said Carr.
