Peninsula theater companies are finding something to sing about this summer, staging myriad musicals with a few straight plays thrown into the mix in June.

Los Altos Stage Company is staging the Stephen Sondheim/James Lapine musical “Sunday in the Park with George” June 2-25 at Bus Barn Theater in Los Altos.

The original production won the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for drama and was nominated for two Tony Awards. It’s inspired by the French pointillist painter George Seurat’s “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.”

Tickets are $20-$40 at www.losaltosstage.org or 650-941-0551.

The Ragazzi Boys Chorus will perform a newly commissioned piece called “Created for Joy” for its spring concert on June 4 at 4 p.m. at Aragon High School in San Mateo. Tickets are $25-$45 at www.ragazzi.org or 650-362-4425.

After several preview performances, TheatreWorks Silicon Valley opens Robert Harling’s “Steel Magnolias” at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, June 10. It runs through Sunday, July 2. An ASL interpretation will be included for the June 20 performances, and open captioning will be available June 25 and 28.

Elizabeth Carter will direct “Magnolias,” the story of four women who bond through both good times and difficult ones at Truvy’s beauty parlor in a small Southern town. It’s been made into a motion picture and been presented off-Broadway several times.

Tickets are $30-$82 at www.theatreworks.org or 877-662-8978.

TheatreWorks had planned to offer a world premiere production of a new musical, “Alice Bliss,” in July, but has now postponed it. “We feel it’s prudent to postpone, both to ensure this show gets the first outing it deserves and to maintain our fiscal stability in the coming months,” artistic director Tim Bond said in a statement.

Palo Alto Players ends its season with “Puffs,” which is described as “seven increasingly eventful years at a certain school of magic.” It’s not the story of Harry Potter but of the Puffs, who were there as well.

Written by Matt Cox, it is neither authorized nor endorsed by J. K. Rowling. The one-act production runs one hour, 45 minutes without an intermission. Due to its strong language, the show is recommended for ages 13 and older.

The show runs June 17-July 2 at Lucy Stern Theater in Palo Alto. Tickets are $30-$57 at www.paplayers.org or 650-329-0891.

On June 30, Pear Theatre in Mountain View opens “Falsettos.” The musical features a book and lyrics by William Finn and James Lapine.

Directed by Janie Scott, “Falsettos” is a combination of two off-Broadway musicals written nearly 10 years apart. Tickets are $35-$38 at 650-254-1148 or www.thepear.org.

Foothill Theatre Arts continues its production of “Infinite Black Suitcase” through June 11. The play, written by E.M. Lewis, is directed by Pear Theatre’s executive artistic director Sinjin Jones.

Tickets are $15-$25 at www.foothill.edu or 650-949-7360. “Suitcase” will be performed in Lohman Theatre at Foothill Community College in Los Altos Hills.
