Car Bursts Into Flames After Crashing Into Guardrail: Cops

An officer saved the man from the burning vehicle, which had flipped over and crashed into the East Marion causeway guardrail, police say.

EAST MARION, NY — A speeding car crashed into a guardrail and burst into flames on the East Marion causeway Monday night, police said.

According to Southold Town Police, the incident took place at 11:32 p.m. on Route 25 in East Marion when Antonio McGill, 30, of Mastic, who was reportedly "traveling at a high rate of speed" and failing to maintain his lane while heading east lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the guardrail.

The vehicle flipped over and burst into flames, police said.

Southold Town Police Officer John Hinton helped McGill out of the vehicle; McGill had moderate burns and was airlifted to Stony Brook Hospital by Suffolk County Police aviation, police said.

East Marion and Orient Fire Department responded to extinguish the fire.
