Popular dance night Mother Funkers aimed at women who want to avoid late night clubs and sticky floors is to relaunch this April in Brighton.

Originally started by Sally Kennedy in 2004, the first night was put on in St Mary’s Church Hall in Brighton out of a passion to go out dancing.

Sally, Director of Mother Funkers said: “I was making the children their tea, dancing to Chaka Khan, and thought I need a dance, a proper dance, and not while I’m cooking fish fingers.”

The night was created with mothers in mind, but anyone is welcome who wants to go out for a dance in a nice environment without any hassle.

Sally says that men who dance and arrive with a woman or a group of women are welcome at MF as long as they do dance!”

The new venue is at The Funky Fish Club at the New Madeira Hotel and after the night ends at 11.30 it changes back to the normal club venue but as an introductory offer for April you can stay and boogie for the rest of the night.

Many of the nights already passed have received fantastic feedback, each night has request slips so you can choose the music you love to dance to.

Sally said: “The atmosphere is fantastic – a cross between a private members club and a school reunion but with more vodka than testosterone.”

Mother Funkers has grown outside of Brighton and there are nights put on in many different towns now including Farnham, Worthing, Rochester, and Bowdon in Cheshire.

In response to the growth of the night Sally said: “Someone on Radio 2’s Johnny Walker’s Drive time – as it was then- saw the original article in the Argus and I was asked to talk about it on air”.

She further added that she was inundated with people wanting to do it where they lived, and even a TV drama pilot was pitched to BBCTV.”

Anyone wanting to put on their own Mother Funkers night can enquire on their website.

The first new Mother Funkers night is on Friday 1st April from 7.30pm to 11.30pm.
