It felt strange to find Masaaki Suzuki’s interpretation of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio being advertised by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment as an “energetic, thought-provoking new production”. Though less dynamic than some interpretations, Suzuki’s treatments of Bach have always been energetic enough, within the boundaries set by fluid hand movements that never vary from an elegant wriggle or a polite downward curve. But thought-provoking?

Not in the sense of challenging conventions and stimulating debate. The thoughts that rose into my noddle during Suzuki and the OAE’s London stop on their European tour had all occurred before, with the ensemble’s pungent instrumental artistry and lively singing taking pride of place.
