What to see, do and hear: MARTA concert, seasonal stagings and art, more

DANCE

The Adinkra Project will perform for one night only this weekend at the Windmill Arts Center. Artistic Director N.K. Condua, a Morehouse graduate, named the company after a Ghanaian alphabet; he’s the American born son of Ghanaian parents. For this concert, titled Artistic Excellence, he chose some of his favorite works by other choreographers and will also present his new work Surrenders. Read more about the concert and the company in ArtsATL dance writer Robin Wharton’s preview. Nutcracker ballets are being performed all across Atlanta this month, but none can compare with Yuri Possokhov’s high-tech production created for Atlanta Ballet in 2018. ArtsATL’s dance critic Cynthia Bond Perry has described it as “remarkable” and The Washington Post hailed it as “one of the most entertaining out there.” Mikaela Santos makes her debut in the central role of Marie this year. Friday at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Sunday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. Weekends through December 26. Tickets start at $53.

This Thursday, Anne Archer Dennington, the administrative and artistic leader of Flux Projects, will be in a livestream conversation with Elizabeth Labbe-Webb, executive director of Core Dance in this week’s 1830EST. Their discussion promises to be full of wise insights and will be available after the livestream at coredance.org. Under Dennington’s guidance, Flux Projects has fostered community connections through pioneering public art initiatives such as Stone Speaks and Ghost Pools and has helped redefine Atlanta’s public spaces. 6:30 p.m. Free.

ART+DESIGN

Deanna Sirlin will screen her recent video works and discuss her paintings and large-scale installations on Monday in the lower level auditorium of the Fulton County Library’s Alpharetta branch. On Painting, Light and Video kicks off at 6:30 p.m. Free. The Object Space, Jane Jackson’s recently launched gallery project, will host a holiday open house and new exhibit opening on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Multivalent Women Makers: Renowned and Rising International Ceramic and Textile Artists is a comprehensive exhibition with works spanning the globe from Atlanta to Australia and many places between. Each piece reveals a unique universe of life, color, texture, scale and medium. Through January 13.

Chris Veal, Honey Pierre and Lucy Luckovich are among the 35 artists represented in the current, end-of-year group show at the Cat Eye Creative show Tis’ the SeasonThrough January 7.

THEATER

A Christmas Story is at Theatrical Outfit, starring Tom Key and Max Walls in the iconic role of Ralphie Parker at different points in his life. ArtsATL writer Benjamin Carr reviews the show as providing “a fun, familiar Atlanta holiday feeling” and having strong performances from Walls and Key, as well as from Tiny Beautiful Things stars Maria Rodriguez-Sager and Robin Bloodworth. Tickets are $55, with discounts available.

Snowgirls: The Musical is at Out Front Theatre through December 17. Based on the 1995 cult film Showgirls, this North Pole adaptation stars Anna Holland as a reindeer and features costumes by Eric Griffis and music by David Cerda. It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play continues its run at Stage Door Theatre. Written by Joe Landry and directed by Candy McLellan, the production is a unique spin on the 1946 film and depicts five individuals performing the holiday classic over radio waves. MUSIC

The MARTA Artbound’s Concert on the Car series returns this Friday and December 15 with guitarist Alex Gordon performing in the Atlanta Streetcar from noon until 3 p.m. Gordon specializes in what he calls “self-contained guitar,” which requires no other instrument for support or accompaniment. Gordon supplies his own rhythm, bass and harmony in a style that echoes such masters as Chet Atkins and Tuck Andress.

Tony Award winner Adrienne Warren, who received the award for her lead role in Broadway’s Tina: A Tina Turner Musical, will make an appearance at SCAD’s Holiday Spectacular concert Friday at 7 p.m. at the SCADshow theater. The show will also feature American Idol winner Candice Glover and Showtime at the Apollo winner George Lovett, both SCAD alums, and the SCAD Bee Sharps performance ensemble. Tickets are $25, with discounts for students, seniors, alumni and military.

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, under the baton of Norman Mackenzie, continues the tradition begun by the late Robert Shaw for the Christmas with the ASO program that features holiday carols, hymns and more. The ASO will be joined by the Morehouse College Glee Club for four concerts at Symphony Hall: Saturday at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sunday at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tickets start at $15.
