LAS VEGAS — Apple on Tuesday unveiled Final Cut Pro X, a new version of its nonlinear editing software that will list for just $299.
The announcement was made before a huge crowd — probably close to 2,000 — at a FCP User Group’s SuperMeet held in Las Vegas the same week at the NAB Show. Attendees cheered enthusiastically during the presentation.
The well-received new version is a 64-bit system with a new interface. Features include support for picture resolution up to 4K. The new version of Final Cut is slated for availability in June.
It has been roughly two years since there has been news of a new version of the popular nonlinear editing software, which was first launched at NAB in 1999.
Final Cut’s customer base ranges from hobbyists to professionals. Apple reported that its user base now exceeds 2 million.
During the presentation, Apple took a swipe at its competitors, contending that Avid and Adobe “are in a race for second place.”
Avid’s Media Composer remains the tool of choice among members of American Cinema Editors. ACE’s most recent member survey found that the majority of ACE member use the Avid system.
