Happy 60th Birthday Whisky A Go Go: The world famous whisky is hosting a series of shows to celebrate its 60th (!) anniversary, and Los Altos outfit the Chocolate Watch Band was the first last week. This week, they’re hosting Los Angeles blues rockers Canned Heat (Jan. 12), Glendale psychedelic rockers the Strawberry Alarm Clock (Jan. 13), the current lineup of Love featuring Johnny Echols (Jan. 14) and Robby Krieger of the Doors (Jan. 16). There’s also a cover band called Captain Flashback’s Laurel Canyon Love on Jan. 15, and each show has a ton of opening bands. Loads of ‘60s joy!

We spoke to the Strawberry Alarm Clock in 2017, when they were celebrating the 50th anniversary of their “Incense and Peppermints” classic tune.

“Nowadays when we look at each other, especially when we’re playing music, it’s a feeling of the playing that’s basically identical to what we felt when we were kids,” said bassist/rhythm guitarist George Bunnell. “Until you walk by a mirror and see your reflection. What? Who’s that? That’s how it is. But we have the same personalities. Our keyboard player [Mark Weitz] and one of our drummers [Randy Seol] rub each other the wrong way and always have. We get through it all the time. But that dynamic has never changed.”

We spoke to Krieger in 2018, when he told us that, “I kept getting calls to play Doors stuff, and then one time, my son Waylon said, ‘Hey, let me sit in on a couple of songs. He did, and then about a couple of weeks after that, we get a call. I think it was Dickey Betts who couldn’t play a show in Florida. They called us, I asked Waylon if he wanted to go and do this gig. It’s a whole set, not just a couple of songs. He wanted to try it. That was the reason I started doing it again, because my son Waylon started singing with us. That was really cool.”

“When we do The Doors, it’s pretty much The Doors,” he continued. “When I do the other stuff, though, we do a couple of Doors songs. It’s tough because people really want to see me do The Doors. Doing my jazz, they’re always calling out for Doors songs. It’s a good problem to have, I guess.”

Happy 60th Birthday Whisky A Go Go: The event takes place at 6 p.m. on Friday, January 12, Saturday, January 13, Sunday, January 14, Monday, January 15 and Tuesday, January 16 at the Whisky A Go Go.
