Angela Dice, 45, Storyteller, Wife, Mother, Friend, Cook

Angela Dice, a Bremerton-based storyteller, devoted wife, dedicated mother, cherished daughter, and friend, died Dec. 12, 2023, in Silverdale. She was 45 years old.

Angela lit up rooms with her laugh, days with her smile, and meals with her cooking. She had been living with cancer since 2019, not that you would know it by the way she climbed into mountains to cut down a Christmas tree https://www.kitsapsun.com/story/life/2021/12/09/christmas-tree-thats-memories/6455106001/, chased her son around Disneyland and grilled steak and vegetables - grown where she could see them - on her back porch.

In her years at the Kitsap Sun and the Central Kitsap School District, she told the stories of her community. Off the clock, Angela was the center of a home and family that was built by birth, marriage, and friendship.

Angela Deanne Smith was born in Bremerton on Sept. 15, 1978. She was raised by her mother, Sue Meyers, and her grandparents, Dean Meyers and Fusae Meyers. She was proud of her Japanese heritage and traveled to Japan nearly every summer as a child to visit family (and eat the food).

Angela graduated from Bremerton High School in 1996 and attended Western Washington University, where she studied journalism. After graduation, she interned at what was then called The Sun (now Kitsap Sun), an experience that turned into a full-time job as a reporter.

At the Sun, Angela covered everything from cops and courts to food, arts, and culture. As the newspaper business transitioned into the digital news business, Angela was a leader as in the Sun's newsroom in a new role as Web Editor. She demonstrated the way local news organizations can harness social media and online newsgathering and storytelling tools.

While at the Sun, she met Vince Dice, an editor at the paper. Many of their colleagues learned not just of their engagement, but that they had been dating, when it was announced in an item in the paper. They married in 2005 at Molly Ward Gardens in Poulsbo.

She gave birth to their son, Dean, in 2014. Angela never wanted anything more than to be close to Vince and Dean.

After a decade at the Sun, Angela took her storytelling skills to a number of different outlets - both as a freelancer for publications like Seattle Weekly and, eventually, in marketing and public affairs departments across the region. After stints at the Department of Corrections and Harrison Hospital, she settled in 2015 at the Central Kitsap School District, where she was charged with sharing the stories of the district's students and teachers with the community.

Angela is survived by her husband, Vince, and son, Dean, of Bremerton; mother, Sue Meyers of Seabeck; grandmother, Fusae Meyers of Silverdale; mother-in-law, Julie Dice of Bremerton; and dear friends, Betsy, Chris, Thomas, and Lucy Kornelis of Bremerton. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Dean Meyers of Silverdale.

Through her years-long battle with cancer, Angela continued to live life deeply and give friends and family memories that they cherish. In the last 18 months of her life, she traveled with family to Disneyland twice, visited the San Diego Zoo, spent a week camping on the Oregon coast, and continued to entertain at their home in Bremerton.

In the week before her death, Angela spent time with colleagues at the Central Kitsap School District and with family and friends cutting down a Christmas tree in the Olympic National Forest.

A celebration of life is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday, January 13 at Summit Avenue Presbyterian Church, 403 S Summit Avenue, Bremerton.

Please enjoy a few minutes with your friends and family and remember - or raise a glass, if you're so inclined - that your time with them is a gift and their time with you is a blessing.

In lieu of flowers, please donate in Angela's memory to the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation, https://tnbcfoundation.org/support-us P.O. Box 204, Norwood, NJ, 07648.
